'Your garden gives off chaotic energy. Please tone it down': Jealous neighbor files HOA complaint over new resident's gardening skills

Can you imagine being so jealous of your neighbor's garden that you would go so far as to file an HOA complaint against them?

Most people with poor gardening skills would likely come across someone else's impressive garden and accept that they will never be able to pull that off. This, of course, shouldn't be an issue. Not everyone has that skill or interest, and that should be okay. 

Someone else's knack for gardening should not be interpreted as some kind of an insult to your lack of skill in that department. And yet, for this older lady in the neighborhood, her next-door neighbor's collection of flowers and vines was so impressive that she needed to make it stop. 

Now, this author has to attend an HOA meeting because his garden allegedly does not match the "aesthetic" guidelines of the neighborhood. Of course, his tense encounter with the older woman made it obvious who was behind this unnecessary waste of resources.   • We can't help but suggest that this guy should take pictures of his next-door neighbor's garden and show up to the meeting with evidence that her garden does not meet community standards. It seems that the HOA handbook regarding outdoor gardens is pretty malleable, so who's to say that the author can't bend the rules in his favor in the same way that this lady did? Giving this woman a taste of her own medicine might be the very thing that will convince her to back off and mind her own business.

  • CiscoLupe ⚫ Very little hoa experience and certainly not a lawyer but their requests are entirely too vague in my opinion. You can't say a yard is "chaotic" and expect the owner to fix anything.

  • You can say something like, no plants in the front, just grass - St Augustine grass" Or no plants over 2 feet tal. Or plants that cover 30 percent of less of the total yard.

  • Take your bouquet with you, but also take a copy of your CCRs and ask them to point out exactly which covenant your happy garden is violating. And then ask them for the HOA's attorney's contact info.

  • You don't necessarily need to do anything with the attorney's contact info, but it tends to make board members itchy when there's a chance you're going to kick up a fuss and cost the HOA money in the form of attorney's fees.
